THE DATA ECONOMY:

That said, I do believe there’s a big opportunity - it’s in the Data that is captured explicitly (entering info on yourself in your profile) and implicitly (the groups you join, the content of the messages you send each other). In some social nets like Facebook and LinkedIn, the data is very deep and for the most part true. The profile page itself is a treasure trove of information on age, gender, location, interests, work experience, favorite movies, tv, etc - all the attributes a great brand marketer wants to target when reaching an audience.

The advertiser may not have measurable success reaching the user in the social network, but if they had access to the data when the user is on other sites - more conducive to engagement with ads - the advertiser would be in nirvana.

The data economy is developing fast where data is decoupled from ad inventory and used to target audiences where ever they are (Mayfield companies Audience Science, Adchemy, and Rubicon Project are leading the charge here). I think the big social networks are aware of this but are treading carefully given the privacy concerns. I do believe when they find the right mix of user privacy and sharing of this data, they can provide it to advertisers, networks, and publishers and profit handsomely from it. They can make more money on a user by charging a tax for the data each time its used vs the pageviews from that user on their site.

Let’s do the math and make some assumptions to illustrate:

I used the following estimates on ad impressions/user/mo on top social networks:
- Facebook: 356
- Tagged: 387
- Myspace: 452
….Avg: 403

…And I assume $.50 as the assumption for eCPM (which I believe maybe high). Thus, on average a social network makes $.20 per user per month on ads on their site.

USING SOCIAL NETWORK DATA TO MAKE MONEY OUTSIDE THE SOCIAL NETWORK

Now, let’s look at how many ad impressions the typical internet user encounters in a month - I’ve found it to be about 1,650 per month. Let’s also assume the following:

- 50% of these impressions could be targeted using the vast amounts of profile and friend data from SNS
- $2 eCPM for such a data targeted ad
- the social network keeps 15% of this revenue for its data (which seems like the going rate talking to data players).

That’s about $.25 per user per month. So, if my assumptions hold true, then a social network can monetize their users $.25 offsite vs $.20 onsite….

Social networks will make money on their site - thru ads, virtual goods, etc - but the real big opportunity is freeing all the user data and enabling it to target them wherever they are on the web.

Indeed god demands you to safe keep what people entrust in you, and to rule them with justice. [this a verse of Koran]
Respectable and intelligent people of Iran, These nights and days, a pivotal moment in our history is taking place. People ask each other: “what should we do?, which way should we go?”. It is my duty to share with you what I believe, and to learn from you, may we never forget our historical task and not give up on the duty we are given by the destiny of times and generations.
30 years ago, in this country a revolution became victorious in the name of Islam, a revolution for freedom, a revolution for reviving the dignity of men, a revolution for truth and justice. In those times, especially when our enlightened Imam [Khomeini] was alive, large amount of lives and matters were invested to legitimize this foundation and many valuable achievements were attained. An unprecedented enlightenment captured our society, and our people reached a new life where they endured the hardest of hardships with a sweet taste. What this people gained was dignity and freedom and a gift of the life of the pure ones [i.e. 12 Imams of Shiites]. I am certain that those who have seen those days will not be satisfied with anything less. Had we as a people lost certain talents that we were unable to experience that early spirituality? I had come to say that that was not the case. It is not late yet, we are not far from that enlightened space yet.
I had come to show that it was possible to live spiritually while living in a modern world. I had come to repeat Imam’s warnings about fundamentalism. I had come to say that evading the law leads to dictatorship; and to remind that paying attention to people’s dignity does not diminish the foundations of the regime, but strengthens it.
I had come to say that people wish honesty and integrity from their servants, and that many of our perils have arisen from lies. I had come to say that poverty and backwardness, corruption and injustice were not our destiny. I had come to re-invite to the Islamic revolution, as it had to be, and Islamic republic as it has to be. In this invitation, I was not charismatic [articulate], but the core message of revolution was so appealing that it surpassed my articulation and excited the young generation who had not seen those days to recreate scenes which we had not seen since the days of revolution[1979] and the sacred defense. The people’s movement chose green as its symbol. I confess that in this, I followed them.
And a generation that was accused of being removed from religion, has now reached “God is Great”, “Victory’s of God and victory’s near”, “Ya hossein” in their chants to prove that when this tree fruits, they all resemble. No one taught hem these slogans, they reached them by the teachings of instinct.

How unfair are those whose petty advantages make them call this a “velvet revolution” staged by foreigners! [refering to state TV and Khameneni, perhaps!] But as you know, all of us were faced with deception and cheatings when we claimed to revitalize our nation and realize dreams that root in the hearts of young and old. And that which we had predicted will stem from evading law [dictatorship], realized soon in the worst manifestation.
The large voter turnout in recent election was the result of hard work to create hope and confidence in people, to create a deserving response to those whose broad dissatisfaction with the existing management crisis could have targeted the foundations of the regime. If this good will and trust of the poeple is not addressed via protecting their votes, or if they cannot react in a civil manner to claim their rights, the responsibility of the dangerous routs ahead will be on the shoulders of those who do not tolerate civil protests. If the large volume of cheating and vote rigging, which has set fire to the hays of people’s anger, is expressed as the evidence of fairness, the republican nature of the state will be killed and in practice, the ideology that Islam and Republicanism are incompatible will be proven.
This outcome will make two groups happy: One, those who since the beginning of revolution stood against Imam and called the Islamic state a dictatorship of the elite who want to take people to heaven by force; and the other, those who in defending the human rights, consider religion and Islam against republicanism. Imam’s fantastic art was to neutralize these dichotomies. I had come to focus on Imam’s approach to neutralize the burgeoning magic of these. Now, by confirming the results of election, by limiting the extent of investigation in a manner that the outcome will not be changed, even though in more than 170 branches the number of cast votes was more than 100% of eligible voters of the riding, the heads of the state have accepted the responsibility of what has happened during the election.
In these conditions, we are asked to follow our complaints via the Guardian council, while this council has proven its bias, not only before and during, but also after the election. The first principle of judgment is to be impartial. I, continue to strongly believe that the request for annulling the vote and repeating the election is a definite right that has to be considered by impartial and nationally trusted delegation. Not to dismiss the results of this investigation a priori, or to prevent people from demonstration by threatening them to bloodshed. Nor to unleash the Intelligence ministry’s plain clothes forces on people’s lives to disperse crowds by intimidation and inflammation, instead of responding to people’s legitimate questions, and then blaming the bloodshed on others.
As I am looking at the scene, I see it set for advancing a new political agenda that spreads beyond the objective of installing an unwanted government. As a companion who has seen the beauties of your green wave, I will never allow any one’s life endangered because of my actions. At the same time, I remain undeterred on my demand for annulling the election and demanding people’s rights. Despite my limited abilities, I believe that your motivation and creativity can pursue your legitimate demands in new civil manners.
Be sure that I will always stand with you. What this brother of yours recommends, especially to the dear youth, in terms of finding new solutions is to not allow liars and cheater steal your flag of defense of Islamic state, and foreigners rip the treasures of the Islamic republic which are your inheritance of the blood of your decent fathers. By trust in God, and hope for the future, and leaning on the strength of social movements, claim your rights in the frameworks of the existing constitution, based on principle of non-violence.
In this, we are not confronting the Basij. Basiji is our brother. In this we are not confronting the revolutionary guard. The guard is the keeper of our revolution. We are not confronting the army, the army is the keeper of our borders. These organs are the keepers of our independence, freedom and our Islamic republic. We are confronting deception and lies, we want to reform them, a reform by return to the pure principles of revolution.
We advise the authorities, to calm down the streets. Based on article 27 of the constitution, not only provide space for peaceful protest, but also encourage such gatherings. The state TV should stop badmouthing and taking sides. Before voices turn into shouting, let them be heard in reasonable debates. Let the press criticize, and write the news as they happen. In one word, create a free space for people to express their agreements and disagreements. Let those who want, say “takbeer” and don’t consider it opposition. It is clear that in this case, there won’t be a need for security forces on the streets, and we won’t have to face pictures and hear news that break the heart of anyone who loves the country and the revolution.

Moving onto the meat of his talk, Minotti argued that "the mobile phone platform delivers a huge addressable audience for games," and as a way of making this clear, asked the audience how many of them were carrying their Nintendo DS, Sony PSP or laptop on them, compared to how many of them were carrying a mobile phone - a significant difference.

Minotti used some statistics to help emphasise his point - in 2006, unit sales of game consoles were 26 million, compared to 209 million PC sales, but both were dwarfed by the sale of 957 million mobile phones in the same period.

"In 2007 there is going to be about 1.2 billion mobile phones sold," said Minotti, "The mobile phone is the most ubiquitous piece of technology there is."
World wide mobile penetration would be at 75% in 2011 according to Minotti, with Africa and Asia the main growth areas...For a 2D mobile game, Minotti estimated that it would normally take 6-9 months for a team of 4-7 people to produce a game on a budget of 100-300k.

Producing a 3D and 2D mobile game would require 8-12 months and 300-700k for 8-15 people, and simple networked multiplayer titles could take up to year for 5-9 people to produce a title on a budget of 200-400k.

iPod titles, however, were very good value - taking 5-7 people 4-9 months to produce something on a budget of 150-400k. Minotti explained, "iPods have a 40 meg footprint, so you can put a lot of animation and special effects on them easily."

To summarise, Minotti returned to the concept that the mobile games industry offered a huge addressable audience, and was the fastest growing segment of the video game market, but most importantly, it is "a medium that rewards good design."

And while MMOGs make up just 7% of the $28 billion game market, they may be the most addictive niche. We must take this architect to its Logical Next Step. We Must Distribute the Web Applications to the shared OS of the Clients Browsers. With support in HTML 5 for "local" SQL databases ( http://webkit.org/blog/126/webkit-does-html5-client-side-database-storage/)
& the move to SQL-lite databases driven Local Applications by Adobe (FLEX & AIR) & Google (Gears), leads us to an Architecture where the Users data is served in SQL-lite Datastores in their devices browser caches (Apple Iphones use of Data URLs to avoid having to access the File systems) or Virtual Machines & Virtualization of OS's to collaboratively processed in a SETI@Home Architecture that allows users to contribute resources to the Performance of their Web Applications. You can use in-memory microsecond databases like Sleepy Cat (the Opensource version of Oracle Times Ten) to do session management of these Distributed Database Dashboards.

This architecture is the only way to build Applications that perform at sub-second response time on dialup speed cellular & Mesh Networks all over the world. It will also lead to Applications that perform faster the the more users use it, while cutting infrastructure cost 75%. Why S3 failed

Late last night, Amazon issued a statement explaining the cause of the problem that hobbled its S3 storage system yesterday morning. It was not a hardware failure. Rather, the service's authentication system, which verifies the identity of a user, became overloaded with user requests. As one person explained to me, it amounted to a kind of accidental DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack, and Amazon didn't have enough capacity in place in one of its data centers to handle the surge.

Here's Amazon's explanation:

Early this morning, at 3:30am PST, we started seeing elevated levels of authenticated requests from multiple users in one of our locations. While we carefully monitor our overall request volumes and these remained within normal ranges, we had not been monitoring the proportion of authenticated requests. Importantly, these cryptographic requests consume more resources per call than other request types.

Shortly before 4:00am PST, we began to see several other users significantly increase their volume of authenticated calls. The last of these pushed the authentication service over its maximum capacity before we could complete putting new capacity in place. In addition to processing authenticated requests, the authentication service also performs account validation on every request Amazon S3 handles. This caused Amazon S3 to be unable to process any requests in that location, beginning at 4:31am PST. By 6:48am PST, we had moved enough capacity online to resolve the issue.

An anonymous correspondent yesterday sent me a copy of the following email that was supposedly sent to some of the company's staff from one of Amazon's top technical executives (AVS refers to the authentication system):

Subject: RE: WTF

My three "Why The Fuck" questions :

1. How come a single EC2 customer can generate so much load on AVS that it renders it inaccessible for all other customers.

2. Why didn't the monitoring on AVS alarm catch this earlier?

3. Why is it that we still do not have a better communication plan towards our customers. For a company that proud [sic] itself on its customer focus we are doing an abysmal job here.

I didn't post this yesterday because I couldn't verify its accuracy. But given that it seems to be backed up by the official explanation, I feel comfortable posting it now. Still, it's unconfirmed information. I have asked Amazon whether it's a real email and am awaiting a response. (I hope it's real - this is exactly the kind of visceral email you want to see an exec shoot out in these circumstances.)

Amazon promises quick action to ensure the problem doesn't happen again and that users are supplied with better information on system status:

As we said earlier today, though we're proud of our uptime track record over the past two years with this service, any amount of downtime is unacceptable. As part of the post mortem for this event, we have identified a set of short-term actions as well as longer term improvements. We are taking immediate action on the following: (a) improving our monitoring of the proportion of authenticated requests; (b) further increasing our authentication service capacity; and (c) adding additional defensive measures around the authenticated calls. Additionally, we've begun work on a service health dashboard, and expect to release that shortly.

All in all, I think Amazon has handled this outage well. The problem revealed some flaws in Amazon's otherwise highly reliable system, including shortcomings in its communications with users, and the company will make important improvements as a result, to the benefit of all its customers. These kinds of small but embarrassing failures - the kind that get you asking WTF? - can be blessings in disguise.
